Das fiktive „future news lab“ ist ein Think Tank, der sich auf die Fahne geschrieben hat, Nachrichtenkompetenzen zu fördern und somit Einfluss auf die Meinungsbildung und Debattenkultur zu haben.
Nachrichten lesen hat eine große Bedeutung in unserer Gesellschaft, denn durch sie sind wir über das aktuelle Weltgeschehen informiert und können so aktiv an der Demokratie teilnehmen.
Wir haben als Teil unserer Masterthesis das fiktive „future news lab“ gegründet. Das ist ein Think Tank, der sich auf die Fahne geschrieben hat, Nachrichtenkompetenzen zu fördern und somit Einfluss auf die Meinungsbildung und Debattenkultur zu haben. Infolgedessen haben wir einen strategischen Ansatz entwickelt, wie Nachrichten für kommende Generationen gestaltet werden müssen.
Der Begriff „Nachrichtenkompetenzen“ geht über das Lesen und Verstehen von Nachrichten weit hinaus. Es bedeutet auch ein grundlegendes Verständnis von unabhängigem Journalismus zu haben. Ebenso wird ein Hintergrundwissen benötigt, wie eine Demokratie aufgebaut ist. Essentiell ist auch die Fähigkeit Nachrichten von Unterhaltung, Werbung oder Meinungsmache unterscheiden zu können.
Hätten wir alle diese Fähigkeiten vereint, würden wir Informationen besser einordnen und beurteilen können. Werden also in Zukunft keine Nachrichtenkompetenzen gefördert, sehen wir uns mit der Tatsache konfrontiert, dass unsere Demokratie gefährdet sein könnte.
Wir haben daher Grundprinzipien entwickelt, die für die Gestaltung von zukünftigen Nachrichtenformaten entscheidend sind. Dazu zählen neben der Partizipation und der Zugänglichkeit auch, dass Grautöne sichtbar gemacht werden, um ein Schwarz-Weiß-Denken zu vermeiden. Zudem ist es besonders wichtig, dass Leser:innen eine Alltagsrelevanz, also den Bezug zur eigenen Realität, erkennen können.
Es müssen also logische Konsequenzen und Zukünfte von Nachrichten sichtbar gemacht werden. Dies haben wir umgesetzt, indem wir mithilfe des „Futures Wheels“ eine kollaborative Idee eines Nachrichtenformats untersucht haben. Anschließend wurde dieses Format analog und digital mehrfach erfolgreich getestet.
Damit alle Erkenntnisse aus der Thesis und den Testings für Nachrichtenmedien zugänglich sind, haben wir eine Website konzipiert. Hier hat man unter anderem Zugang zu unseren „Weisheiten“. Diese sind Zukunftsfragen, die helfen sollen, zukünftige Formate zu optimieren. Ergänzt werden sie durch Podcasts, die ein Hintergrundwissen von unseren Expert:innen bereitstellen.
Da auch der öffentliche Diskurs angeregt werden soll, haben wir Szenarien gestaltet. Dabei soll im Mittelpunkt stehen wo und wie Nachrichten in Zukunft konsumiert werden. Zusammenfassend macht das Video die Problematik in der Gesellschaft sichtbar und gibt über alle Ergebnisse der Masterthesis einen Überblick.

Reading the news has a great importance in our society, because it keeps us informed about current world events and allows us to actively participate in democracy.
We created the fictitious "future news lab" as part of our master's thesis. This is a think tank that aims to promote news literacy and thereby influence opinion formation and debate culture. As a result, we have developed a strategic approach to how news must be shaped for future generations.
The term "news literacy" goes far beyond reading and understanding the news. It also means having a basic understanding of independent journalism. Likewise, a background knowledge of how a democracy is structured is needed. It is also essential to be able to distinguish news from entertainment, advertising or propaganda.
If we had all these skills combined, we would be able to better classify and judge information. So if news literacy is not promoted in the future, we face the fact that our society will be further divided.
With our master's thesis, we address two sides of the issue. On the one hand, news readers need to strengthen these skills. On the other hand, actors, i.e. editorial offices and news houses, have to ask themselves how they want to shape their formats and convey news in the future.
We have therefore developed basic principles that are essential for the design of future news formats. In addition to participation and accessibility, they include making shades of gray visible to avoid black-and-white thinking. Furthermore, it is particularly important that readers are able to recognize everyday relevance, i.e., that they can relate to their own reality.
Thus, logical consequences and futures of news must be made visible. We did this by using the "Futures Wheel" to explore a collaborative idea for a news format. This format was then successfully tested several times in analog and digital form.
To make all the findings from the thesis and the testings accessible to news media, we designed a website. Here, among other things, people can access our "wisdoms." These are future questions that should help to optimize future formats. They are supplemented by podcasts that provide background knowledge from our experts.
Since we also want to encourage public discourse, we have designed scenarios. The focus is on where and how news will be consumed in the future. In summary, the video makes the problems in society visible and gives an overview of all the results of the master's thesis.
